Curator and juror Aneta Georgievska-Shine selected these two pieces for inclusion in the 18th annual exhibit at the Allegheny Arts Council, which featured artists from around the world exploring the concept of 'sentience.'  The piece above, "Sidewalk in Chinatown," is a photograph that I took in 2011 and recently rendered through photoshop to construct a 'hyperreal' emotional state, so that the image feels tense, overwrought.  The piece to the right, "Night Over Santa Katarina," comes from an ongoing series in progress that I call In the Swim of Night.  The photograph registers the ways in which the urban night scrambles relations between people and things, requiring both heightened awareness but also greater levels of trust.
